A backlink is where you have your website address on somebody else's website. It is like a vote to your web.

This is also known as a one way link because your website URL is pointing back to your site, and you are not turning around and pointing a link back to that person's website.

You get backlinks from this form of marketing when you make comments in a forum and create a signature file with a link pointing back to your site.
